Testing and Investigation

You have all you need for this Splat activity, apart from three notices to post up around the classroom so that they can easily be seen by the whole of the class. One with the word ‘Change’, on it, one saying ‘Measure or Observe’ and finally one for ‘Keep the same to make it fair. Each group will also need blu tac so they can splat their factor cards under the notices as they make their choices.

The teacher reads out one of the testable questions from the answer sheet and asks for the groups to choose the factor card(s) which would be splatted under ‘Change’ for that question. When the teacher decides that the groups are ready, one student from each group moves across the room to splat their answer. Next time the teacher may want the factor for Measure or observe that corresponds to the testable question that they read out and so on.

When students are doing this activity for the first time they may need quite a lot of support to understand how the structure of the question tells them which factor must be changed. Having the question written down for them as well as reading it out aloud a number of times will also help. Think about running through all the factors which could be changed with the class, as if you were a student trying to work out the answer too!

Fresh Technologies

Technology played a key role in unifying our distributed team of experts as we executed a series of network infrastructure projects to bring high definition video conferencing to our campus network. The use of high definition video conferencing would give our institute the ability to communicate with an ever widening group of intellectuals.

However, the purpose of this presentation is not to describe how we built this new network; but rather how we built the team that built this new network. The more we used collaborative technologies and superimposed our skills on a common goal, the more successful we became.

Since the process of building and maintaining a institution network requires a diversity of skills, our team was comprised of experts from diverse technical areas: Microbiology, Bio-Technology, Bioinformatics and project management. We also had a team mentor to preside over cycle 1. In this action research, mentorship and leadership played a key role in inspiring the team to use technology maturely and effectively.

Ecosystem services are the benefits of nature to people – households, communities and economies. They comprise provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural services. ‘biodiversity’, simply means the variety of life on Earth. Stated another way, it refers to the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems The ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.
